Some owners of the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are reporting random restarts. The issue occurs while using Face ID, Apple Pay, and even during phone calls, while the underlying cause remains unknown.
Users have begun widely sharing complaints on social media and Reddit. One iPhone 18 Pro Max owner said the phone started unexpectedly restarting less than 24 hours after purchase. According to the user, it happened three times while using Face ID and once more when trying to open Apple Wallet. After resetting Face ID, the device worked normally for a while, but the issue later returned and had to be addressed again.
“It hasn’t even been 24 hours, and my 18 Pro Max is already panic restarting,” the Reddit user wrote.

After contacting Apple Support, the company decided to replace the smartphone, explaining that the user had most likely received a defective device. However, similar cases soon began appearing in other discussions. One owner reported a panic restart on an iPhone 18 Pro, while another said their phone hard-rebooted after they tried to use Apple Pay.
Users have yet to reach a consensus on whether the problem is related to the hardware in the new iPhones or to iOS 27. Some believe the operating system update is to blame, although one iPhone 17 Pro Max owner said they had not experienced similar restarts after installing the same version of iOS.
At the same time, the issue may not be limited to the iPhone 18 lineup. One user said their phone had already restarted on its own twice, including once in the middle of a phone call. The same user added that their Apple Watch Series 12 had also unexpectedly restarted once.

Some owners believe the issue is software-related and that Apple will release a fix soon. The company has not yet issued an official statement about the problem, but some users say Apple replaced their devices after they contacted support.
One user said they were already on their second phone, but the problem was still happening.
“I’m already on my second phone. It just keeps happening. I’m not replacing it a third time.”
Another user suggested that if the issue is indeed hardware-related, it could become a serious problem for Apple. At the same time, they considered a software bug more likely, one that the company could potentially fix with an update.
For now, it remains unclear whether the random restarts affecting the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are caused by the devices themselves or by iOS 27. Apple has not officially commented on the issue, although the company has already replaced devices for some affected users.
