Alphabet’s Waymo has made a breakthrough in road safety. According to a study conducted in collaboration with insurance company Swiss Re, Waymo’s robotic taxis reduced property damage claims by 88% and personal injury claims by 92%.
The study looked at 25.3 million miles of autonomous driving by Waymo and compared it to more than half a million insurance claims. By comparison, human drivers would receive 78 property damage claims and 26 claims for the same distance. All accidents involving Weymo are investigated, and the company maintains that in most collisions the vehicle was not at fault. Additionally, Weymo’s robotic taxis have demonstrated safety performance equivalent to state-of-the-art 2018-2021 vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).
Waymo has been working to improve safety since 2009 and is now a leader in autonomous transportation. In cooperation with Swiss Re, the company uses large volumes of data to evaluate the effectiveness of its technologies. Waymo’s ADS (Automated Driving System) technology is the result of many years of innovation aimed at reducing the human factor in traffic accidents: Waymo’s research confirms the undeniable advantages of autonomous vehicles and is an important solution for safe road transport in the future. The results show great potential for reducing accidents, improving the reliability of the transport system and contributing to a safer society.
