Starting January 1, 2025, access to Pornhub and other pornographic sites owned by Aylo will be blocked in Florida under new age verification requirements. This was the result of strict age verification laws aimed at protecting minors from accessing explicit content; the Canadian company Aylo, which also owns Brazzers and RedTube, refused to comply with these requirements, citing risks to the security of user data.
Under the new laws, websites dealing with adult content are required to verify the age of their users, often by providing personal information such as identifying information. Ailo believes that this will undermine the security and privacy of users, forcing them to rely on less regulated platforms. For example, in Louisiana, Pornhub’s traffic dropped by 80% after a similar law was introduced. Lawmakers who support such measures believe that Aylo’s refusal to comply with the law reflects their true target audience. Florida Congressman Chase Tramonto said, “Their choice to shut down the site instead of protecting children speaks volumes.” Instead, Ailo proposes to introduce verification at the phone level and shift the responsibility to smartphone manufacturers.
Similar laws are already in place in states such as Alabama, Texas and Montana. Ailo has repeatedly advocated for a privacy-focused approach, noting that current legislation increases users’ risks without effectively addressing the problem. Despite financial losses and pressure from lawmakers, the company stood firm on its position.
The Florida decision highlights the difficulty of balancing privacy and regulation in the digital age. While lawmakers seek to protect children, critics say such laws create an unsafe online environment for all users.
