Analyzes the participation of Russian athletes who openly support the war against Ukraine in international competitions, in particular at the 2024 Olympic Games. It highlights how famous Russian athletes, including the military, maintain contact with the Russian authorities and express their political views, which contradicts the principles of neutrality in sports.
Russians were allowed to participate in the 2024 Olympic Games. We already know the names of the athletes who will represent terrorist states at international competitions. However, many of them openly support Russia’s war against Ukraine. Some of them are even military. And although they are “neutral” in the sports arena, in public they actively support the war that Russia has unleashed against Ukraine. This article will tell you more about the position of “neutral” Russian athletes.
Europe is ready to host them at the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris from July 26 to August 11. Athletes from different countries will compete for the title of Olympic medalist. Russians and Belarusians will take part in the competition. Although they do not compete under their countries’ flags, their presence is not neutral, as they actively support the war on social media and public statements.
Russians always remain Russians despite “neutrality”. This was clearly visible at the Australian Open 2023, when fans of a Russian tennis player who was acting as a “neutral” hung a banned Russian flag. Molfar identified those fans at the time. Or the scandal with the “neutral” Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev, who cursed at the referee in Russian at a competition in Dubai (which is also prohibited in the sports arena). Rublev was then disqualified.
