Let’s consider the implementation of an open source intelligence (OSINT) task. The exercise is aimed at analyzing a video showing people walking along a bicycle path. At first glance, this may seem insignificant, but the task requires readers to use various OSINT techniques to obtain the maximum amount of information about the event. The article describes the analysis process, the tools used, and the conclusions drawn from the data obtained.
This exercise requires you to answer two questions.
a) As far as you know, what time was the video recorded?
b) Find the coordinates of the place where the person was walking at the time of recording.
The @VisitTirana account was first investigated and found to have its own website.
A search was made for links to “Eriseld Myrto” mentioned in the tweet.
Eliseld Myrto was selected as one of the top 10 winners of the 2021 photo contest. This suggests that “Eliseld Myrto” may be a photographer. He used several aliases such as “four_s34sons” and “Seldi Myrto”. Accounts on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Pexels, etc. have been discovered, confirming his activity as a photographer working with various accounts. It turned out that the video tweeted by @VisitTirana was uploaded by him to Instagram and TikTok.
The upload date and time of these videos were checked and it was found that the Instagram video was uploaded first. The bellingcat tool was used to analyze TikTok videos.
Twitter and TikTok can upload videos, but the metadata is erased. The next step was to research the location of the video. It is known to be Tirana, but additional clues were found in the video. The video shows buses passing by, and there is a sidewalk between the roads.
In Tirana, it often seems that there are gaps between the roads.
This is combined with bus route information. It is also possible that he was near the MARITIM Hotel, judging by the Reel uploaded the same day on Instagram.
This narrowed the circle of priority roads for research. An urban development plan called BICYCLE VISION is also being developed in Tirana. It is clear from this document that the hint in the video “pavement between roads” is very important because there are several types of cycleways.
All that remains is to travel in street view. The difficulty is that the street view is from 2016 and the video is from 2023. Also, since the city is still being developed, not all structures match. Street lights, billboards and buildings are places of interest to look out for.
