Game Freak, the developers of the popular Pokémon game, confirmed that the personal data of more than 2500 employees was leaked through unauthorized access to the company’s server in August 2024.

In August 2024, Game Freak’s servers were subjected to a cyberattack that leaked the personal data of 2,606 company employees and contractors, including names and email addresses. The company has already started informing the victims individually. The leak affected not only current employees, but also former employees, who must now contact the company themselves for further instructions.

Game Freak is known for its development of the Pokémon franchise and is one of the founding companies of the Pokémon Company, which was created with Nintendo in 1998. According to data as of March 2024, the company employs 207 people on a permanent and contract basis.

Other news sources have reported leaks of significant amounts of data, including source code and behind-the-scenes information, but Game Freak’s official statement did not mention leaks of Pokémon data or codes for future releases.

Game Freak continues to investigate the details of the cyber attack and take measures to protect the victims. The data breach is yet another reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in today’s tech companies.
