Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a ban on the use of social networks by children under the age of 16

This decision, aimed at reducing the harmful effects of social networks on the mental and physical health of young people, should enter into force by the end of 2025. The government notes that children are exposed to negative images and content, particularly disfiguring images and misogynistic material.

Australia is already testing an age verification system that includes biometric technology and document verification. Platforms like Facebook, TikTok and YouTube will be solely responsible for implementing the system. There are no penalties for users, parents or children, and the government will provide support for effective implementation.

The world is already trying to limit the influence of social media on young people. For example, in the United States, children under the age of 13 must obtain parental consent, and in France, the government has also proposed to set the age limit to 15. Australia has become the first country to ban social media for children under 16 without parental permission.
