Duolingo changes course: instead of contractors, artificial intelligence

Duolingo has announced a strategic shift to an “AI-first” model, gradually abandoning the services of contractors in favor of automated AI solutions. This has caused a mixed reaction among users and experts.

In an internal letter that was posted on LinkedIn, Duolingo co-founder and CEO Louis von Ahn announced the company’s transition to automated content generation using artificial intelligence, since “manual work does not scale.” From now on, the focus will shift to creating large volumes of educational materials using AI, rather than involving people to perform routine tasks. In addition, AI will be involved in the hiring and performance evaluation processes of personnel. At the same time, Duolingo emphasizes that this is not about completely replacing people, but about eliminating bottlenecks in processes.

Duolingo has more than 100 million active users per month and has already integrated AI elements into its functionality, such as video calls and automatic suggestions. At the same time, the company has repeatedly been criticized for deteriorating content quality and control issues. Some users express concerns that the transition to a full AI model could negatively affect the learning experience, while others believe in increased efficiency.

Duolingo’s transition to an “AI-first” model is a prime example of how large EdTech companies are trying to find a balance between efficiency and the human factor. Time will tell whether this strategy will pay off. But it is already clear: the ability to work with AI is becoming critical for new employees.
