Heather Morgan, also known as “Razzlekhan”, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for helping her husband launder bitcoins stolen from the Bitfinex exchange in 2016.
Morgan and her husband, Ilya Lichtenstein, used mixers, bank accounts in Russia and Ukraine, and multiple crypto exchange accounts to launder the funds. Lichtenstein, who hacked Bitfinex and stole 119,754 bitcoins ($10.8 billion at today’s exchange rate), was sentenced to 5 years in prison. Morgan found out about the source of the funds in 2020, but even before that she helped hide their origin. The court took into account her clean reputation, professional background and the fact that she spent almost no money on herself.
The couple’s trial demonstrates that even years later, cybercriminals can be brought to justice. This is an important step in the fight against money laundering in the crypto ecosystem.
