The FBI is investigating a spate of racist and threatening text messages targeting African-Americans, Hispanics and members of the LGBTQ+ community following the US presidential election.

Messages from anonymous numbers included calls to “return to the plantation,” to be deported, or to “go through a re-education camp.” While there are no confirmed cases of violence, the FBI and Department of Justice are actively investigating the incidents. Many messages were found to be blocked by mobile carriers such as T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon. Some of the messages were probably sent through the TextNow app.

Targeted messages like these are often based on data purchased from brokers who offer phone lists with demographic and political details. The FBI suspects that such data could have been used to precisely target specific communities. The FBI is working to identify the source of the racist messages and is stressing the importance of monitoring the data being sold.
