Houston doctor Ethan Heim has been accused of unauthorized access to the personal health information of pediatric patients at Texas Children’s Hospital and has been charged with obtaining and disclosing protected information.

Ethan Haim, 34, of Dallas, allegedly accessed personal information, including patient names, treatment codes and treating physician information, from Texas Children’s Hospital’s electronic system without authorization. Haim, a Baylor College of Medicine resident who previously worked at TCH, reportedly requested to reactivate his login access in April 2023 to obtain this information under false pretenses. The indictment alleges that Haim intended to maliciously harm TCH and later disclosed the information to a member of the media. If convicted, Haim faces up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant US Attorney Tina Ansari. Haim is set to make an initial appearance before U.S. Magistrate Judge Yvonne Y. Ho in Houston. The charges highlight the seriousness of unauthorized access to protected health information and the legal consequences of such actions. The indictment serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting patient information in healthcare settings.
