In a landmark court ruling, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, was ordered to stop using its trademark in Brazil because of a conflict with a local IT company that also goes by the Meta name.
A court in São Paulo ruled against Meta Platforms Inc., founded by Mark Zuckerberg, requiring it to stop using the Meta name in Brazil within 30 days of the ruling, which is until March 29. The decision comes after the Brazilian digital solutions and management company, also known as Meta, filed a lawsuit claiming it suffered damages due to confusion caused by the identical names.
Brazil’s Meta, based in Barueri, São Paulo, registered its brand with the country’s National Intellectual Property Institute in the late 2000s, well before Mark Zuckerberg renamed his company Meta in 2021. Since then, the Brazilian company has faced legal problems and confusion over the similarity of the names.
The decision by the court in Sao Paulo is a significant blow to Meta Platforms Inc., which sought to realize its vision of a “metauniverse.” This decision highlights the importance of checking trademarks and names across jurisdictions to avoid such conflicts.
