Microsoft Asks iPhone Users to Re-Enter Credentials After Outlook Outage

After a massive Outlook outage, some iPhone users are facing a new problem – the app and email services are now requiring them to re-enter their logins and passwords. Microsoft has confirmed the situation and provided recommendations on how to restore access.

A major outage hit Outlook.com users across the globe on Monday. As a result, Apple iPhone users will have to enter their login information again to get back into their outlook and hotmail mail using the regular “Mail” application.

Microsoft confirmed the issue the next day. According to it, there were intermittent issues accessing user’s email accounts, resulting in loss of mailbox access. Some users reportedly were also automatically logged off their account and experienced the “too many requests” error message.

There has been no detailed explanation of why the outage occurred. Microsoft initially stated that the issues were caused by a “recent change” made to the system; however, no further detail was given. Approximately ten hours after the initial reports of the issue, the service started to come back online, and Microsoft indicated that the service had stabilized at approximately 7 PM (UTC) yesterday. However, this would not resolve the issue for iOS users. For iOS users, they would need to manually enter in their username and password so that email can function properly again in the “Mail” application.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Open your “settings” on your phone.

  2. Find your “mail” setting.

  3. Tap “accounts”.

  4. Select your email address.

  5. Click on the “account” settings or where it says password.

  6. Enter your existing password.

  7. Save those changes and see if your mail is syncing correctly in your “mail” application.

Microsoft did not report how many users were impacted by this outage nor which geographic region(s) were most heavily impacted. The incident has been categorized as a “degradation of service”, meaning while users noticed issues with the service, no one lost full access to all of their services.

While this is not the first time we’ve seen such an outage recently, it’s not the first time either. We saw a similar type of outage occur in March of this year as well. An outage in exchange online occurred, blocking mail and calendar access through multiple platforms including Outlook on both web and desktop versions. Additionally, another problem occurred at the same time with logging into Microsoft 365 copilot and office.com, impacting copilot use within teams as well as the office apps.

We also had a bug fixed just over a week ago regarding a number of classic outlook users who could not send or respond to emails due to an inability to authenticate. Those attempting to reply or forward emails were receiving non-delivery notifications with error codes 0x80070005-0x0004dc-0x000524.

Additionally, Microsoft is currently working on resolving several other technical bugs occurring at present. These include but are not limited to: the disappearing mouse cursor in Outlook, OneNote, etc… as well as an error preventing groups creation in classic Outlook.
