OpenAI has officially confirmed the development of GPT-5, a new basic language model that aims to increase competition with current leaders such as Gemini 2.5 Pro and Claude 4. The release of GPT-5 is expected in the summer of 2025.

At the AI Summit in Mexico, OpenAI representatives confirmed that GPT-5 is in the development stage. Although the final price of the product is not yet known, it is expected to be comparable to GPT-4 or higher. The company hopes that the new model will “be able to compete a little more”, referring to the growing competition from new AI models that show better results, especially in the field of programming.
This is not the first time OpenAI has announced ambitious updates to its technology. GPT-4 was released in 2023, and since then the company has been gradually improving ChatGPT. In particular, on June 3, 2025, OpenAI opened access to the updated Memory feature for free accounts. The new version of memory allows the AI to better store information about previous conversations, although for free users it works in a simplified form. Users can manage memory through settings or use temporary chats (analogous to incognito mode).
OpenAI seeks to maintain its leadership position in the field of artificial intelligence, promoting GPT-5 as a response to technological competition. The GPTs updates and memory improvements point to the company’s move toward more personalized and powerful AI. However, the final timeline and capabilities of GPT-5 could still change — as has happened many times in the past.
