PewDiePie is tired of Google’s surveillance and calls for switching to open source analogues

his new video, PewDiePie openly declared: “I’m DONE with Google” — and urged his millions of subscribers to ditch Google services in favour of open-source alternatives. One of the most famous content creators on the planet, with over 100 million followers, he’s now speaking out loud: Big Tech has crossed the line, and it’s time to act.

In the video titled “I’m DONE with Google”, which quickly racked up millions of views, PewDiePie shares a personal moment: after simply Googling himself, he realised how much data had been collected on him — without his consent. Visibly frustrated, he doesn’t hold back:

“It honestly pisses me off how much Google knows about me. I never agreed to this.”

He goes on to talk about alternatives to YouTube, Gmail, Google Search, and Android — urging fans to try open and decentralised tools like DuckDuckGo, ProtonMail, NewPipe, GrapheneOS, Mastodon, PeerTube.

The key point is: he’s not just ranting — he’s calling for real action, still with his trademark irony, but in a noticeably more serious tone:

“Maybe we can’t control what they already know. But we can still control what we choose to use.”

This message didn’t come out of nowhere. In the past year, global distrust towards Big Tech has surged:

  • Google and Meta were repeatedly caught leaking data and tracking users even in “private” mode;
  • Open source tools are booming — ProtonMail, Signal, Tor, Mastodon are growing like never before;
  • YouTube is deleting videos and restricting creators without clear explanations, frustrating countless content makers.

PewDiePie also encourages people not to throw away their old devices that can’t handle modern Google services. Instead, he suggests installing Linux, setting up a home server, or trying self-hosted tools. Yes, it’s a bit harder — but it’s the path to digital freedom: taking back control of your data, stepping away from corporate lock-in, and playing by your own rules.

This isn’t about deleting Gmail today.
It’s about making conscious choices — and embracing alternatives that are more relevant than ever.
