A California man has been sentenced to more than 26 years in federal prison for selling fentanyl and methamphetamine through one of the largest dark web marketplaces. Investigators found that he had used the anonymous platform for years to distribute drugs across the United States.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, 39-year-old Darren Hughes operated a vendor account on Nemesis Market. To attract customers, he even offered free samples of methamphetamine. One of those offers was answered by an undercover law enforcement agent, leading to a series of controlled purchases between the agent and the seller.

Throughout 2023, Hughes sold methamphetamine and fentanyl pills to the undercover agent on five separate occasions, receiving payment in cryptocurrency. After arranging another drug transaction, he was arrested in Redwood City, California. A search of his vehicle uncovered approximately 672 grams of methamphetamine, a so-called “ghost gun” without a serial number, and other equipment linked to drug trafficking.

Hughes was found guilty of drug trafficking charges in November 2025. His final sentence was handed down in late May 2026. U.S. District Judge John F. Kness sentenced him to more than 26 years in federal prison.

Nemesis Market operated from 2021 and was considered one of the largest dark web marketplaces in the world. According to investigators, the platform processed more than 400,000 orders, including tens of thousands of transactions involving stimulants and opioids. In March 2024, an international law enforcement operation involving authorities from the United States, Germany, and Lithuania led to the marketplace’s takedown and the seizure of its servers. U.S. officials estimate that nearly $30 million worth of drug sales were conducted through Nemesis.

The case of Darren Hughes is another reminder that the anonymity offered by the dark web and cryptocurrencies does not guarantee immunity from prosecution. Despite using specialized marketplaces and digital methods to conceal his activities, law enforcement agencies were able to document his operations and successfully prosecute him in court.
