A group of artists accused OpenAI of using their work without payment and released the Sora model for public access.
A group of 18 artists accused OpenAI of using their work to develop the Sora text-video model without proper compensation. In an open letter published on the Hugging Face platform, the company claims to have used them as free testers, PR agents and sources of feedback.
The artists who participated in Sora’s testing were promised minimal compensation, but instead their work was used to improve the model, which OpenAI estimates is worth $150 billion. In response, the protestors published an early version of the API for Sora that allowed AI video generation.
Sora models can create high-quality 60-second videos based on text requests or images. Although OpenAI quickly shut down access to the project, dozens of videos have already been created by Hugging Face users.
OpenAI introduced the Sora model in February 2024 as an innovative tool for generating videos from text prompts. However, cooperation with artists caused outrage due to the lack of transparency and monetary compensation. The protests intensified calls to support creative professions in the world of artificial intelligence.
