A former Disney employee hacked the menu and changed the allergen information

A former Disney employee, angered by his layoff, hacked the company’s restaurant menu software and removed warnings about allergens, including peanuts, causing serious health problems for resort guests, the FBI said.

  • After being fired, former Disney menu manager Michael Scheuer launched an attack on the software used in Disney restaurants. He logged in using a fake administrator account and changed the menu description to hide dangerous allergens, including peanuts. For several weeks, the software became unusable.
  • In addition, Scheuer changed the font to “Wingdings,” added profanity to the menu, and altered the QR code to redirect users to an inappropriate site. The attacker also saved the personal information of his former colleagues and attacked them through DoS attacks, trying to disrupt the systems. The FBI says all of the attacks were carried out from Scheuer’s home.

This case is a clear example of how important it is to ensure that access to internal systems and software is properly secured, especially after an employee has been terminated. Disgruntled former employees who have access to corporate data or systems can cause significant damage, affecting not only the company, but also the health and safety of customers. Draw conclusions: when working with people, it is necessary to ensure the protection of data and systems even after the end of the employment relationship.
