The hacking group Rhysida said it hacked The Washington Times and put its “exclusive” data up for sale in an online auction. The attackers set a seven-day deadline to purchase data for 5 bitcoins.

Rhysida, known for her attacks on various organizations, including municipalities and hospitals, has now turned her efforts to one of the most prominent conservative media in the United States, The Washington Times. The hackers claim to have corporate files, including bank statements and personal documents of employees, which they are offering to buy for 5 bitcoins. The Washington Times has not yet responded to requests for comment, and its website continues to operate without apparent disruption.

Rhysida is a Russian hacker group that appeared on the scene in May 2023. It quickly established itself as one of the most active groups engaged in data encryption and subsequent ransom demands. The group uses a double extortion tactic where, even after paying the ransom, victims are threatened with publishing the stolen data unless they pay an additional ransom. Rhysida has already carried out several high-profile attacks on large companies, municipal institutions and even hospitals, including children’s hospitals.

The attack on The Washington Times confirms that Rhysida continues its aggressive activities targeting influential organizations. This again underscores the importance of cybersecurity in the media industry, especially in the face of the growing threat from malware.
