US imposes sanctions on Russian hosting service Zservers over LockBit links

Zservers actively supported LockBit activities, including the attack on the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in 2023. US intelligence agencies have confirmed that members of the group often rented IP addresses through Zservers. The US government has imposed sanctions not only on the company, but also on two of its key administrators: Alexander Mishin and Alexander Bolshakov.

In addition to Zservers, the UK has imposed sanctions on six individuals, including Ilya Sidorov, Dmitry Bolshakov, Igor Odintsov and Vladimir Ananyev, as well as a British front company, XHOST Internet Solutions LP. The investigation found that one of Zservers’ clients, detained in Canada in 2022, used the service to launch LockBit attacks; in November 2023, the company also provided services to criminals who attacked financial institutions in Europe and the US.

Bulletproof hosting is a service that ignores complaints about illegal activity, allowing cybercriminals to carry out attacks without fear of being blocked. In recent years, the US has been actively fighting such platforms. For example:

  • In 2023, the Lolek Hosted service was closed.
  • In 2021, the founder of the hosting company PowerHost[.]ro received three years in prison.
  • In 2021, Alexander Grichyshkin received 5 years in prison for launching a similar service.

The US continues to crack down on Russian cybercrime infrastructure by shutting down hosting providers that help hackers carry out attacks. The sanctions target not only companies but also executives, sponsors and key technical experts. Given the tightening of global cybersecurity regulations, such operations are likely to continue in the near future.
