An Indian court has ordered the blocking of Proton Mail in the country, citing complaints about anonymous emails using artificial intelligence to create fake images and offensive content. This is the second time the end-to-end encryption platform has faced a ban in India.

On April 28, 2025, the Karnataka High Court ordered the Indian government to initiate the process of blocking Proton Mail under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. The case was filed by M Moser Design, which complained about receiving anonymous emails with artificial intelligence-generated images and vulgar content from the platform. The court ordered the temporary blocking of certain URLs until the investigation is completed.

This is not the first conflict between Proton Mail and the Indian authorities. In 2024, the service was accused of spreading fake mine threats. At the time, the company publicly assured that it does not transfer data to foreign governments, adhering to Swiss law. At the same time, the platform has repeatedly emphasized its principled position: to protect privacy, but not to support illegal activities.

The situation with Proton Mail demonstrates the tension between state control of content and the digital rights of citizens. If the Indian government continues to pressure services with end-to-end encryption, this could affect the global landscape of confidential communication and freedom of expression.
