The United States has indicted two Sudanese brothers for their involvement in the Anonymous Sudan cybercrime group, which has attacked critical infrastructure, government offices and hospitals around the world.
Brothers Ahmed Salah Yusuf Omer (22) and Alaa Salah Yusuf Omer (27) were charged with conspiring to damage protected computers. In particular, Ahmed Salah was charged with three more charges of damaging computers. They ran the group Anonymous Sudan, which is known for its attacks that led to long-term outages of network systems, including in hospitals and US government offices.
Anonymous Sudan has repeatedly boasted of its attacks through the Telegram channel, claiming political or religious motives. In addition to hospitals such as Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, they have also attacked the US Department of Defense, Microsoft, and government sites in the state of Alabama. These attacks caused more than $10 million in damage in the US alone.
The operation against Anonymous Sudan was part of an international effort to stop cybercrime. The group’s actions have attracted the attention of major tech companies such as Amazon and Crowdstrike, which have helped investigate and destroy the infrastructure for the attacks.
