The Rishida Group reported that a cyber attack on Tennessee-based American Addiction Centers occurred in late September 2024. The attackers gained access to the company’s servers and stole 2.8 terabytes of data, including names, addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, social security numbers and medical records.

In November, the Rishida crime group announced the hack, posting the stolen information on the dark web after a ransom demand failed. Victims were offered 12 months of free monitoring of changes to their credit files to protect them from possible fraud.

American Addiction Centers is the largest network of rehabilitation centers in the USA that provide drug addiction treatment services. The organization has more than 2,700 employees serving patients in many states. Previously, the Rhysida cybercriminal group was involved in a similar incident related to the theft of confidential information.

This incident once again highlights the need to improve cybersecurity in the healthcare sector. Companies should strengthen their security measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
