The UK government is considering banning access to social media for children under the age of 16. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the issue is being carefully reviewed amid growing concerns about the impact of digital platforms on teenagers’ mental health.

Speaking in Parliament, Starmer confirmed that the government is reviewing available evidence on minors’ use of social media and potential restrictions. However, he stressed that no final decision has been made at this stage.

The debate intensified after Australia passed legislation setting a minimum age of 16 for access to popular social media platforms. British politicians and advocacy groups have increasingly urged the government to follow a similar path.

Some parent organizations have also voiced support for stricter rules. They argue that social media contributes to screen addiction, worsens mental health issues, and increases children’s exposure to harmful content.

Critics of such measures, however, warn that a blanket ban could be difficult to enforce. They also point to privacy concerns and the need for reliable age-verification systems.

Starmer emphasized that the government is already implementing the Online Safety Act, which places additional responsibilities on technology companies to protect children online. According to him, the effectiveness of these measures will also be considered when assessing the need for further restrictions.

“We are looking at this very carefully and examining all the evidence available,” the Prime Minister said when asked about a potential ban.

The issue of children’s access to social media is being actively debated in many countries. Australia has already approved one of the world’s strictest restrictions, while governments elsewhere are closely watching how the new system performs in practice. At the same time, technology companies are facing increasing pressure to strengthen protections for young users.

The United Kingdom has not yet decided whether to ban social media for children under 16, but the issue has already moved from public debate to formal government consideration. Any future steps will depend on the outcome of ongoing reviews and the effectiveness of existing online safety measures.
