The King County Prosecutor’s Office in Washington has banned police from using generative artificial intelligence to write reports because of the potential for errors.
The King County District Attorney’s office, which handles all legal cases in the Seattle area, sent a memo to police chiefs warning that AI-generated reports would be dismissed. This decision was made due to the risks of errors and inaccuracies in such reports. One example was a situation where the report indicated an officer who was not actually present at the scene.
Chief Deputy Prosecutor Daniel Clark said that AI continues to develop and it is possible that such reports could be used in the future. However, the office does not currently accept reports created with generative AI because they do not meet court filing requirements.
