The article analyzes the losses of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Various types of ships lost by Russia are covered, including amphibious ships, flagships, corvettes, boats and even submarines.
On March 5, 2024, it became known that the Russian ship “Sergei Kotov” had sunk. A Ka-29 helicopter was probably on board. The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reported the success of the operation to destroy the Russian vessel.
A video confirming the destruction of the ship was later published on the official social networks of GUR MOU. During the attack on “Serhiy Kotov”, intercepted conversations of the occupation forces showed that the ship was attacked by five unmanned boats. The Russian vessel received damage to the stern, starboard and port sides.
“Sergiy Kotov” is a patrol ship of the 22160 class of the 22160 project. It is designed for patrolling, surveillance and protection. So far, Russia has launched four such ships and two more are under construction. All of them are based in the Black Sea. Among them, “Vasyl Baikov”, “Pavlo Derzhavin” and “Serhiy Kotov” have already been attacked by Ukrainian defenders.
Only “Dmytro Rohachev” remains intact. Yet. Usually equipped with a helideck and a hangar for one Ka-27 or Ka-226 helicopter. Armament – Kalibr NK missiles (have several modifications, including anti-ship, surface and underwater versions). firing range – up to 2,500 km), 76.2-mm amphibious artillery complex and other defense systems. Russian project 22160 is one of the most modern.
However, he was repeatedly criticized by the Russians themselves for weak booking, insufficient protection and, in general, these ships do not meet the declared characteristics.
Corvette “Askold” or project 22800 “Karakurt”. Before leaving the shipyard, on November 4, 2023, it was hit by Ukrainian missiles. Probably, “Askold” remained afloat, but due to significant damage to critical elements, it actually has to be built “from scratch”.
“Karakult” is a series of small Russian multi-purpose ships. They are armed with rockets and artillery. These vessels can perform a wide range of tasks – from protecting water areas to fighting enemy ships and supporting amphibious operations. “Karakurta” is equipped with the most modern missile systems, including the same “Kalibr NK”. This means that it is an integral part of the Russian fleet.
On February 14, 2024, the large amphibious ship of the Black Sea Fleet of Russia “Caesar Khunikov” was destroyed. Magra V5 naval drones were also used in this attack. The attack was carried out by the special forces of the 13th group of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine in the area of the settlement of Alpuka in the temporarily occupied Crimea. The ship received a fatal hole in the port side and began to sink. Russian rescue efforts were unsuccessful. As a result of the attack, most of the 87 crew members died.
“Cesar Kunikov” is one of the large amphibious ships of “Project 775”, with the NATO codification of the Ropucha class. It had a displacement of 4080 tons. The ship could accommodate up to 500 tons of equipment and cargo and 225 paratroopers. It is armed with two 57 mm AK-725 artillery mounts, Grad-M multiple rocket launchers and 44 Strela-2 portable anti-aircraft missile launchers.
The sinking of the Russian cruiser “Moskva” became one of the most significant events in the context of Ukraine’s defense against Russian aggression. This happened thanks to the accurate use of Ukrainian Neptune missiles. This was a surprise and a serious blow for Russia. The cruiser “Moskva” was the flagship of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.
This ship played an important role in the Russian fleet. Therefore, the sinking of this ship is considered a blow to Russia’s military potential, especially in the Black Sea region.
“Moscow” is a large project 1164 “Atlant” missile cruiser. It is armed with missile weapons, anti-aircraft missile systems and artillery. This ship also ensured the defense capability of southern Russia. The sinking of the “Moscow” showed the vulnerability of even the most protected elements of the Russian fleet to Ukrainian missile weapons.
One of the surviving sailors of the cruiser told his mother in a private conversation that the ship was heading for Odessa. Allegedly, they were planning an amphibious landing operation that was supposed to capture the city.
An analysis of the losses of the Russian fleet shows that a wide range of naval forces became the targets of attacks. Warships of all sizes, performing a wide range of functions – from amphibious operations to patrolling, were destroyed.
Boats and amphibious assault ships suffered the greatest losses, which testifies to the effectiveness of Ukraine’s defense capabilities. The loss of large amphibious ships and frigates reduces the occupier’s ability to conduct large-scale naval operations, which has long-term strategic consequences for the Russian fleet.
The total number of destroyed Russian ships is 12. Approximately 16% of the ships sunk were large amphibious ships. They are critical for the occupier’s naval forces. These ships allow you to transfer a large number of troops, equipment and supplies directly to the coast.
Molfar analysts gathered information about the Russian fleet in several stages. Data on the damage and sinking of ships from Russian websites about the Black Sea Fleet, from various news sites, Telegram channels and video recordings from the scene of the events were used. Ships under repair and fleet support ships were not taken into account in this analysis. This made it possible to compile an overall picture of the losses of the Russian fleet in the Black Sea from the beginning of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022 to February 15, 2024.
A total of 184 warships of the Russian Black Sea Fleet were detected, including six large amphibious assault ships and at least one anti-submarine ship; 51 ships were hit, about 21% of the total. Twelve of these ships were completely sunk, representing 23.5% of the total loss. Among the damaged vessels, there are 19 boats of various purposes, eight of which were sunk.
Since the watershed occupation of Crimea in 2014, Russia has significantly increased its military presence in the region, including aviation, land-based missile systems, air defense systems and, of course, ships.
