Geoint Challenge (Part 2) How to identify buildings from photos

We will find a place from an image – a task that can be solved using modern tools. Let’s consider a step-by-step algorithm for identifying buildings based on a screenshot from a video.

Algorithm

First of all, a screenshot was obtained from the video recording, which recorded two structures: an administrative building and an object with a sign. Important confirmation of the status of the administrative institution were the characteristic signs – a flag located above the entrance, as well as a “protocol” canopy, which is often found in buildings of state importance.

After receiving the image, a Google photo search was performed. The results narrowed down the potential objects and identified the building by matching its features with the options suggested by the system.

To confirm the reliability of the information and avoid errors, additional visual analysis was performed using the Google Panorama service. This allowed comparing the found options with real views of the terrain and architectural details, confirming the correct identification of the object.

The administrative building at this location is characterized by typical features of state institutions, including strict architectural lines, a symmetrical facade, and an official entrance with a protective canopy. Its location and appearance confirm the status of an important municipal facility that performs key administrative functions in the structure of the city of Mukachevo.

Thanks to modern verification methods, it was possible to obtain the exact coordinates of the building – 48.4367789, 22.7226717, which simplifies its identification for further study and use in cartographic or historical and cultural research.

  • Address: 21 Augustine Stefan Street, Mukachevo

  • Location coordinates: 48.4367789, 22.7226717

  • View on map: Google panorama

Conclusion

This approach to analysis allows for the effective identification of urban objects using a combination of visual material, search algorithms, and geolocation technology tools.
