Want to turn your Android into a real hacking tool? Kali NetHunter is a mobile version of Kali Linux for security testing. In this article, you’ll learn what the differences are between NetHunter Rootless, Lite, and Full, which one is best for your smartphone, and what you need to get started. We compare features, hardware support, and ease of installation.

NetHunter is not a firmware for Android, where to install it?

Chroot, also known as root file system (rootfs), is a concept used in the context of Kali NetHunter and other Linux-based systems. It allows you to change the visible root directory of a process to create a restricted environment with its own file system hierarchy. The chroot environment coexists with the Android system.

In the case of Kali NetHunter, chroot or rootfs is used to provide a controlled environment for running Kali Linux tools on an Android device. Using chroot, the Kali NetHunter team has created a way to bring the power of Kali Linux to Android devices without the need for a full Linux installation.

When you run Kali NetHunter, a chroot environment is created on your Android device, where a minimal Linux file system is installed. This chroot environment acts as a separate root directory, isolating the Kali Linux tools and their dependencies from the underlying Android system. The exact location of the NetHunter installation can vary, but it is typically stored in a special directory on internal storage, such as /data/local/nhsystem.

This allows NetHunter to work effectively on the device without interfering with the Android operating system. Simply put, NetHunter installs and runs on top of the Android system without changing its integrity.

Choose NetHunter according to your needs

Kali NetHunter is an open source platform for Android mobile devices based on Kali Linux, which also offers its own NetHunter app store with several useful applications. Importantly for you, there are three different versions of NetHunter for Android devices:

  • NetHunter without root

  • NetHunter Lite

  • NetHunter

NetHunter without root

The non-rooted version does not require a rooted device, which means it can be installed on almost any Android device. The installation process is simple and quick, and the user gets a portable desktop version of Kali Linux running on the device in their pocket. Here are a brief list of the advantages and disadvantages of the non-rooted version that users should be aware of.

Pros

  • Does not require rooting the device, which will void the device warranty

  • Easy installation process

  • Portable full Kali Linux environment available on the device, also locally accessible via HDMI cable, VNC or SSH from a computer

Cons

  • Missing kernel drivers for internal and external Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SDR, HID devices

NetHunter Lite

The Lite version requires rooting the device and is suitable for users without a custom kernel. This means that there is no custom kernel with all the drivers available for a particular smartphone. Because of this, some attack scenarios may not be possible with the standard kernel.

Pros

  • A portable, full-featured Kali Linux environment available on the device, also locally accessible via HDMI cable, VNC, or SSH from a computer

Cons

  • Require rooting of the device, which will void the device warranty

  • Missing kernel drivers for internal and external Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SDR, HID devices

NetHunter

Fully modular version with root access and native kernel drivers. Supports popular external devices needed for penetration testing and wireless network reconnaissance, such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HID, SDR gadgets. This is the most powerful version of NetHunter.

The NetHunter GitLab repository currently contains over 164 kernels for over 65 devices. However, 25 compiled images for the most popular devices are published for download. This means that if a user has an image other than one of the 25, they will need to compile it themselves.

Pros

  • Portable full Kali Linux environment available on the device, also locally accessible via HDMI cable, VNC or SSH from a computer

  • Kernel support for some internal and external Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, SDR, HID devices

Cons

  • Require rooting on the device, which will void the device warranty

  • For some devices, users may need to compile a NetHunter image

Conclusion

The different variations of Kali NetHunter offer users flexibility and choices depending on their specific needs and preferences.

Rootless NetHunter offers a lightweight and portable option for users who prefer to avoid rooting their devices. With this version, you can still access a number of important security tools and perform various network assessments without having to take full control of the device. It is a convenient choice for those who want to preserve the integrity of their device’s operating system while still having access to powerful hacking capabilities. Lite NetHunter is designed for users who want a simplified version of NetHunter with a reduced size.

This option offers a balance between functionality and resource usage, making it ideal for devices with limited memory or processing power. Rooted, on the other hand, offers the most complete and feature-rich experience. By rooting your device, you gain full control over the operating system, allowing you to unlock advanced features and access a wide range of Kali Linux tools. This version provides the most extensive functionality, allowing you to perform in-depth security assessments, exploit vulnerabilities, and conduct advanced penetration testing.

Ultimately, the choice between Rootless, Lite, and Rooted NetHunter depends on your specific requirements and comfort level with modifying your device. Each option offers unique advantages and disadvantages, allowing users to tailor their NetHunter experience to their individual needs.
